There are 3 ways to connect the reader to the system

1) Use the gateway's LAN network.  In this approach the gateway is the DHCP server for the readers and manages the readers network.  It requires a dedicated network setup (VLAN...) from the readers to the LAN of the gateway.  This is the most common method for home and small/medium size business.

2) The gateway can connect to readers that are on the WAN side of the gateway.  The readers would be on your internal network and the gateway must be on the same subnet.  This is another approach that is most commonly used on medium sized businesses.

3) A VLAN can be setup to connect the readers directly to the Viewbiquity router at your data center.  This is most commonly used by service providers when they are rolling out to many facilities.  They create a single VLAN for their fiber huts etc. and bring it back to our equipment at the data center.  If there is only 1 location getting readers this probably isn't necessary.  A similar approach is done with Layer 2 over Layer 3 to provide a large business with many cameras (gateways are limited to 8mbps) cloud recording.
